Kottayam : Labor party’s landslide victory in the United Kingdom general elections got a Kerala push with Sojan Joseph from Kottayam district in Kerala managed to win and thereby represented as an MP from Ashford constituency in Kent. Sojan defeated Damien Green of the Conservative and Unionist party with a majority of 1779 votes.
While six candidates contested in the Ashford constituency, Sojan Joseph recorded a vote share of 32.5 percent marking an increase of 8.7 % points from 2019.
The family members of Sabu Joseph erupted in joy where they distributed sweets and it was celebration time when the results were announced.
“I have no words as of now. His rival was the deputy Prime Minister. We knew it was a close fight and hence we all waited patiently till the end. He certainly deserved the win as he has served the people there for many years. Even during his graduation days, he always found happiness in helping others and was very much involved in social activities. He had just spoken to us and shared his happiness”, said Joseph, father of Sojan to News9.
Who is Sojan Joseph?
Sojan Joseph is currently employed as a borough councillor representing Aylesford and East Stour ward. He is a mental health nurse who has worked in the National Health Service for 22 years and is currently employed as head of nursing, quality and patient safety.
He started his NHS career at the Arundel unit based in the William Harvey hospital as a junior nurse. Sojan went to the UK in 2001 after completing his studies in India. His wife Brita is working as a nurse in the UK.
He joined the William Harvey Hospital as a mental health nurse in its psychiatry section Arundel Unit and moved to Ashford a year later. Since then, Ashford has been his home.
He is now one of the five directors of NHS Kent and Medway that plans and buys healthcare services for nearly 2 million people of the region.
His wife Brita is working as a nurse in the UK. Sojan has two daughters and a son – Hannah, Sara and Mathew.
United Kingdom’s Labour Party Thursday ended the 14-year rule of the Conservatives, securing seats well above the majority-mark. Keir starmer who is on course to be the new prime minister, thanked the British people and said the country has to “return politics to public service”. He also said the people are ready for change and ending the politics of performance.
