Tamil Nadu police seize 6 Antique idols worth Rs 22 crore in smuggling bust, 3 held in Thanjavur

Thanjavur: Anti-Idol Smuggling Squad of the Tamil Nadu police has arrested 3 people after seizing the six antique  idols worth Rs.22 crores which were taken for sale abroad. The police raided the car parked near Thanjavur Periyar Samathuvapuram bus stand. During the search, the police interrogated the car driver and 2 passengers. Following the investigation, the car was searched and 6 bags were found containing antique idols.

6 idols including Tripuranthakar, Veenadaratha Dakshinamurthy and Rishabha Devar were recovered from the bags. It was reported that the 6 recovered idols were found while digging a ditch in the house of Lakshmanan in Korukai village. They were caught by the police when they were taking the 6 idols to Chennai via Trichy for sale. Police arrested Rajesh Kannan, Lakshmanan and Thirumurugan and sent them to jail after being produced in court.

Six metal idols of 3 feet Tripuranthagar, 2.75 feet Veenadhara Dakshinamurthy, 3.25 feet Rishapadevar, 2.75 feet three Goddess idols were seized by the Anti-Smuggling of Idols Police.

Tamil Nadu’s Idol Wing CID Police said the men found with the idols claimed they had found them while digging in a village in Mayiladuthurai district during the construction of a house; police are now trying to determine the provenance of the idols.
