Telangana: Another blow to BRS, MLA from Jagtiyal joins Congress

Hyderabad: BRS MLA from Jagtiyal, M Sanjay Kumar, joined Congress in the presence of CM Revanth Reddy at his residence in Jubilee Hills on Sunday in yet another blow to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

This comes amidst a wave of political defections, with five BRS MLAs joining the Congress in recent weeks. On Friday, former Speaker of Telangana Legislative Assembly, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy quit the BRS to join Congress.

Sanjay Kumar won from Jagtiyal Assembly constituency for a second time on a BRS ticket in the Assembly elections held in November 2023.

More BRS MLAs set to join Congress?

Kadiyam Srihari, Tellam Venkat Rao, Danam Nagender are among some who defected to Congress recently. With these defections, the Congress’ strength in the Assembly has gone up from 64 to 69.

Speculation is rife that as many as 20 BRS MLAs are set to join Congress. These defections have caused turmoil in the BRS, with party leaders gathering at KCR’s farmhouse to stem the defections.

BRS has been weakened significantly since the party lost Assembly elections in the state in 2023. From 88 seats in 2018, the party has been left with 39 seats in 2023. The strength of the party has now come down to 33 with the party losing Secunderabad Cantonment by-election to Congress.

Moreover, the party was unable to win even one seat in the lower house of parliament in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, BRS won nine seats in the Lok Sabha.
