‘Honoured to be back’: New head coach Gautam Gambhir promises absolute devotion to India job

New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir is delighted to have gotten a second chance to serve the country and said he remains as determined as ever to being glory shortly after being named Team India’s new head coach.

Gambhir was announced as the man who would succeed Rahul Dravid by the BCCI after he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to glory in the 2024 Indian Premier League.

His tenure begins from the white-ball series in Sri Lanka starting from July 27.

“India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat,” the former India opener wrote on social media platform X.

“But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!”

Gambhir emerged as the front runner after he and WV Raman were the only two apllicantd for the job once the BCCI advertised for applications.

The former left handed batter had held discussions with BCCI secretary Jay Shah over remuneration and key elements involving the job.

“Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah wrote on social media platform X.

“His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey.”

Dravid had earlier announced he would depart after the T20 World Cup and receibed a winning departure as the Rohit Sharma-led team won the tournament after 17 years.

The 42-year-old Gambhir was a pivotal member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup winning team and the vvictorious 2011 ODI World Cup squad.

He proved to be an able leader as he led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 and then worked as a politician, commentator, pundirt before serving as mentor of IPL side Lucknow Super Giants for two years before a triumphant return to KKR in 2024 as mentor.
