He played every shot better than I did: Novak Djokovic hails Carlos Alcaraz after Wimbledon 2024 triumph

New Delhi: Novak Djokovic had nothing but praise for young Carlos Alcaraz after going down against him in a lop-sided men’s singles final at Wimbledon 2024 on Sunday, July 14. Alcaraz demolished the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the summit clash to clinch his second successive Wimbledon title and 4th Grand Slam at the age of just 21.

In what was a rematch of the 2023 Wimbledon men’s singles final, the 21-year-old once again came out on top to showcase his prowess against one of the best of all time and prove that he is the next big thing in tennis. The Spaniard dominated the proceedings throughout the final with Djokovic admitting he was completely outplayed.

Alcaraz wrapped up a comfortable 2-6, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) victory, leaving the 24-time Grand Slam champion clueless on several occasions in a match that lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes. Praising Alcaraz, Djokovic said he felt ‘inferior’ on the court against him and admitted that the 21-year-old played every shot better than he did.

“The way I felt on the court today against him, I was inferior on the court. He was a better player. That’s it. He played every single shot better than I did. I don’t think I could’ve done much more… he wasn’t allowing me to have free points on my serve,” Djokovic said in the post-match press conference after Alcaraz’s victory.

Alcaraz was a force to reckon with on the Centre Court in the final on Sunday as he broke Djokovic’s serve as many as five times. His backhand shots were terrific and the Spaniard left many stunned with his drop shots against the Serb. Djokovic lauded Alcaraz for playing with a lot of variety and admitted his serving game was a notch above the rest on Sunday.

“He played with a lot of variety. I’ve never seen him serve that way. 136. I’ve never seen him serve that fast. He must’ve had a really good serving practice day yesterday. He really outplayed me… he was better than me in every aspect of the game,” said the 37-year-old, who was hunting for his 25th Grand Slam crown at the All England Club.

An outrageous rally and sliding Alcaraz finish 😮‍💨

4 titles in 4 Grand Slam finals for Alcaraz

Alcaraz has been unstoppable since he rose to no.1 after clinching his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022. He has been unbeaten in all four Grand Slam final appearances ever since and has 4 titles from 4 finals. The 21-year-old is the only second player after Roger Federer to have won his first four Grand Slam finals.

Federer won his first seven Grand Slam finals in a row. Alcaraz also became only the sixth player after Federer, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal,  Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg to win the French Open and the Wimbledon titles back to back.
