Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday announced that free RTC bus transport for women in the state will begin on August 15, on the occasion of 78th Independence Day of India.
The announcement was made by Revenue Minister Satya Prasad Anagani and is among one of the promises made by the TDP as a part of the ‘super six’ schemes prior to the elections.
The super six schemes promised by the TDP include increased pensions for senior citizens, Mega DSC notifications, free travel for women on RTC buses, 20 lakh jobs for youths in 5 years, Rs 3,000 allowance for the unemployed, maternity grant of Rs 15,000 per year for every mother.
APSRTC officials have asked for reports on the implementation of this scheme in Karnataka and Telangana and requested details on the number of women traveling daily, the burden on the government, potential problems during implementation among others.
As per projections, the implementation of the scheme in Telangana may cost about Rs 1,500 crore per year and the state government has released Rs 374 crore as a subsidy for the scheme when it began in December 2023. TSRTC initially plans to claim Rs 250 crore per month.
