Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu, which has a monopoly over wholesale and retail vending of alcoholic beverages in the state on Wednesday clarified that it has no plans to sell liquor at homes through online platforms such as Swiggy, BigBasket, Zomato, and its Blinkit quick-commerce arm.
No such decision has been taken and there are no plans to sell liquor online, TASMAC and also said that there are no plans to introduce alcoholic beverages in paper bottles known as tetra packets.
The clarification from TASMAC comes after an English daily newspaper reported that the Tamil Nadu government is planning to sell low-alcohol products such as beer, wine, and flavored liquors in Tamil Nadu through online distribution companies like Zomato, Swiggy, and BigBasket.
Following the news report, the state based political party Paatali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and founder of the party, Ramadoss, had warned that the party would hold a protest against DMK-led Tamil Nadu government if they have any such plans. In a social media, he said, Chief Minister MK Stalin, who promised to gradually introduce alcohol prohibition in Tamil Nadu, should not allow such plans that promote alcohol consumption.
“Tamil Nadu government should abandon the plan to sell liquor at homes through online distribution companies; If not, the PMK will gather people and hold a huge protest, Ramadoss said.
