Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy: No privatisation of Visakha Steel Plant

Visakhapatnam: Union Minister of Steel & Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy said that Visakha Steel Plant is helping the country’s economic development and that there is no question of privatisation of the plant.

Kumaraswamy visited and conducted a review meeting with the management of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) in Vizag on Thursday. Speaking to the media he said that there are many people dependent on the plant and that it is the government’s responsibility to protect it.

Asked about privatisation of the plant he said, “There is no question of privatisation. Who said we will privatise? We have been in discussion regarding issues if RINL and working on how to revive the plant. There is a possibility of revival and we are looking out for it,” he said.

Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Samithi leaders told tv9 telugu, “We have been fighting for Visakha steel for the last three years and we are still fighting to prevent the privatization of the steel plant. We have explained the situation and alternatives to the Union Minister. They asked for a month and a half time to take the right decision.”

This remark comes after the Centre was keen on privatisation of the plant earlier and protests were launched to stop the privatisation.  Last year in Rajya Sabha, the Union government cited huge losses as the reason for its decision to privatise the plant.
