Kochi : Raising concerns on the security and safety of orphanages in Kerala, three teenage girls are missing from an orphanage in Aluva near Kochi from today morning.
CCTV footage that has been retreived shows that the girls had left the orphanage on their own. The girls were seen carrying a bag and leaving the premises at 12:48am
According to the police, the girls aged 15, 16 and 18 years were found missing from the orphanage early in the morning and the police were informed around 7.30 am.
A missing case has been registered, and an investigation is launched to find out the whereabouts of the teenagers, police said.
The police have ruled out kidnap as they have received the CCTV footage of the girls leaving the orphanage via the back gate of the orphanage carrying a bag and an umbrella at 12:48 am.
“We are investigating the matter and we have alerted all the police stations and also keeping a close watch on the possible places where they could have gone. We have also questioned the wardens and the owner of the orphanage and have collected few details”.
“We believe its a planned escape. One of the student who is missing had skipped classes saying she was unwell. Since the case involves minors we are investigating the matter”, said the officer to News9.
Meanwhile, there has been at least seven cases of girls reportedly missing from orphanages in Kerala in the past 7 months.
A startling revelation was made in the ‘Right To Information’ reply which brought to light that 5338 girls’ missing cases were registered in Kerala in a matter of five years – January 2029 to December 21, 2023.
The reply is dated on April 12, 2024 as per the State public information officer.
Between 2016 and 2021, a staggering 43,272 females had gone missing in Kerala and 40,450 (93%) of them were tracked down, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has said in its report Crime in India 2021. As many as 2,822 — 2,449 women and 373 girls — of them are yet to be tracked.
