Meet your Olympian: All you need to know about ace shuttler PV Sindhu

New Delhi: Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is one of the greatest shuttles of all time in the history of Indian badminton. A modern-day great, Sindhu has been the flagbearer of women’s badminton in the country and continues to inspire thousands across the nation with her heroics on the court. Sindhu will be heading to Paris for her third appearance in the Olympics and will be aiming to become India’s most successful Olympian.

Sindhu has won numerous accolades and titles for India across major events in the last few years. However, her highest achievement remains her maiden Olympic medal which came at the Rio Games in 2016. Sindhu went down against Carolina Marina in a marathon final to settle for a silver but scripted history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to win a silver medal at the Olympics.

That was just the start of Sindhu’s dominance in the women’s circuit as she converted her silver medal in 2018 to gold at the World Badminton Championships in Basel in 2019. Sindhu continued her stellar run at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 where she bagged a bronze medal to become the first Indian shuttler to win multiple medals at the Olympics.

She also became only the second Indian overall after Sushil Kumar to win two medals at the Olympics. In Paris, Sindhu will be hoping to add another medal to her tally which will see her become India’s most successful Olympian of all time with three medals to her name. Sindhu will be competing in women’s singles and will have to be on top of her game to go all the way in Paris.

PV Sindhu’s remarkable career

Born on July 05, 1995, Sindhu’s incredible consistency at the highest level can be credited to her sporting genes which she inherited from her parents, who were both national-level volleyball players. Sports were in her veins but she found her solace in badminton, not volleyball after getting inspired by India’s present badminton chief coach Pullela Gopichand.

Sindhu started training at the tender age of 8 and created waves in the junior circuit before attaining prominence at the international level. After claiming a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championships in 2011, Sindhu won the gold medal in the competition the following year and there was no looking back. She also won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011.

In her Asian Games debut in 2014, Sindhu went on to win a bronze medal while also bagging bronze in her first Commonwealth Games in the same year. Sindhu’s biggest achievement came at the Rio Olympics where she won the silver medal and followed it up with a gold medal at the World Championships in 2019.

Sindhu bagged her second Olympic medal in Tokyo where she clinched a silver in the last edition. She also won her maiden gold medal in women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Despite facing injury issues, Sindhu helped India create history by winning a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Dubai in 2023.

She has not enjoyed the best of form heading into the Paris Games but will be hoping to utilise her experience and finish on the podium again as she eyes an elusive third Olympic medal in what has been an illustrious career.

Ace shuttler PV Sindhu will be aiming to become India’s most successful Olympian with a third medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The two-time Olympic medallist is the only Indian shuttler with multiple medals at the showpiece event.  Badminton Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
