Rahul Dravid set to make dream IPL return but not with KKR – Report

New Delhi: Rahul Dravid is reportedly edging closer to a dream move in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following his successful coaching stint with Team India. Dravid signed off on a high after guiding the Men in Blue to victory at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean. Following the title-winning stint with India, Dravid is looking for a new adventure and IPL looks like the likeliest destination.

Last week it was reported that Dravid is in talks to join Kolkata Knight Riders to replace Gautam Gambhir as the head coach in a straight swap deal between the BCCI and KKR, Gambhir joined Team India as head coach after guiding Knight Riders to victory in IPL 2024.

But as per the latest report in TOI, Dravid is in talks with his former franchise Rajasthan Royals.

“Talks are going on between RR and Dravid, and an announcement in this regard is round the corner,” a source told Times of India.

While Dravid’s future remains unclear, Gambhir is off for his first assignment as the Indian team’s head coach. The former India opener flew to Sri Lanka along with the team members and support staff for the white-ball tour of the Island nation. Before the team’s departure to Sri Lanka, Gambhir, in his first press conference as India’s head coach, admitted that he has some big shoes to fill.

Dravid led Team India to a T20 World Cup victory in the Americas and helped the country end a 13-year-long WC jinx. He came close to ending the drought in the ODI World Cup last year at home but the flawless campaign ended in a heartbreak with a loss against Australia in the final. At the request of skipper Rohit Sharma, Dravid agreed to extend his contract with BCCI and the decision bore fruit with India’s second T20 World Cup title.

An emotional homecoming

If the deal materialises, Dravid will make an emotional homecoming to Rajasthan Royals. The legendary batter led RR to the finals of the Champions League T20 in 2013, and play-offs of the IPL in 2013.

He has worked as a mentor and coach with the IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils franchise before leaving the job in 2017 over a ‘conflict of interest’.
