Cauvery delta- the backbone of Tamil Nadu Agriculture
Cauvery plays an important role in agricultural production in Tamil Nadu. The river Cauvery originates in the Western Ghats region of Coorg in the state of Karnataka and enters Tamil Nadu through the districts of Kodagu, Mysore, Bengaluru, and Ramraj Nagar. Then the water flows into Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu and reaches Mettur Dam via Salem. 12 districts including Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Trichy, Thanjavur, and Tiruvarur will benefit from the water released from Mettur Dam.
For this, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, it is customary to release water from the Mettur Dam to the Cauvery Delta for irrigation on June 12 every year. But this year the Mettur Dam completely dried up and presented a spectacle as the water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu was not opened. As Farmers were affected by this, the Tamil Nadu government had announced the Samba Synthesis Scheme for the farmers.
The water level of Mettur Dam, which plays an important role for agriculture, has doubled in a week. The water level, which has reached 80 feet at present, is expected to touch 100 feet soon if there is a similar flow of water in the coming days.
