Sumit Nagal to face Corentin Moutet in 1st round of Paris Olympics, Bopanna-Balaji to meet locals

New Delhi: Top-ranked India men’s tennis player Sumit Nagal will face Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the first round of men’s singles event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The draws were announced on Friday at Club des Loges at the iconic Roland-Garros.

From being out of top 500 rankings a couple of years ago, Sumit has made giant leaps this year to break into top 100 and eventually qualified for the men’s singles category at the 33rd edition of the Summer Games in Paris. He will take on a local favourtie Corentin, who is currently ranked at 68 in the latest ATP rankings.

Sumit and Corentin have faced each other on four occasions, with both players having won two matches each. The star Indian tennis player has dominated the proceedings on the clay court, having a 2-1 edge over the French, including his latest win in the first round of Marrakech Open 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. It should be noted that all tennis matches of Paris Olympics (singles and doubles) will be held at Roland-Garros (clay court), the same venue where Carlos Alcaraz won French Open 2024 title.

Sumit attained his career-best ranking of 68 earlier this month to become the fourth-highest ranked Indian player since 1973. Somdev Devvarman (62), Ramesh Krishnan (23), and Vijay Amritraj (18) have achieved higher rankings than the Haryana-born player in the history of ATP rankings.

Rohan Bopanna-N Sriram Balaji to meet local players in Round of 32

Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji are the only men’s doubles pair to compete at the Paris Olympics. The duo is set to face Fabien Reboul and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the round of 32. Bopanna, who is the oldest athlete in the Indian contingent at 44, helped India seal a spot for men’s doubles on the virtue of his top 10 ranking by the date of the cut off. The Karnataka-born veteran player asked the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to name Sriram Balaji as his partner for the Olympics.

The tennis matches for all five categories at the Paris Olympics 2024 are scheduled from July 27 to August 4.
