New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly zeroed in on the four players that they want to retain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. The BCCI has already confirmed that there will be a mega auction ahead of the new season and all ten teams will be able to retain only a limited amount of players for heading into the auction.
It is not yet confirmed how many retentions will be allowed by the BCCI for each team. A meeting between the BCCI officials and the franchises is expected to take place soon to discuss the rules that can be implemented in the mega auction. From the number of retentions to the overall purse of each team, a range of topics will be up for debate in the meeting.
Ahead of the meeting, a report in Cricbuzz has claimed that CSK are likely to retain a total of four players, given a total of 4 retentions are allowed ahead of the mega auction. As per the report, CSK will retain skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana and Shivam Dube.
Chennai Super Kings will also retain the legendary MS Dhoni, depending on the number of retentions allowed. If there are 5-6 retentions allowed then CSK will retain Dhoni which would mean that their former captain will return for the five-time champions in the IPL next season.
Dhoni stepped down from captaincy ahead of IPL 2024 and handed over the baton to Gaikwad. IPL 2024 was expected to be the last season for the India legend for CSK. However, he is yet to open up on his future after CSK failed to make it to the playoffs last season. As per Cricbuzz, Dhoni has held discussions regarding his playing future with CSK owner N Srinivasan.
Gaikwad, Jadeja, Dube and Pathirana likely retentions for CSK
Gaikwad took over captaincy from Dhoni ahead of IPL 2024 and did well as the team nearly made it to the playoffs. The right-hander was also CSK’s leading run-getter of the season with 583 runs from 14 matches. He has been one of the most consistent performers with the bat for the franchise over the last few years and might get retained as the first-choice player ahead of IPL 2025.
Jadeja, on the other hand, has been part of CSK since 2012 and is one of the key players for the franchise. Dube joined CSK ahead of IPL 2022 and has since become a vital cog in the team with his swashbuckling performances. Dube was also part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad after his brilliant show in IPL 2024.
Pathirana started his career as a net bowler for CSK and was roped in as a replacement for Adam Milne. The franchise have invested heavily in the young Sri Lankan pacer and he is set to be retained for his unique skills. Pathirana played onLY six matches last season due to an injury and picked up 13 wickets.
