Heavy rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu: IMD issues Red alert for Nilgiris, Coimbatore

Chennai: The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has issued ‘Red alert’ (rainfall above 204.5mm is expected in a day) at a few places in hilly areas of Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 31. The Meteorological Department has also warned that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in the hills of Theni and Tenkasi districts.

“Very heavy rain at a few places in hilly areas of Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts; Heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places over hilly areas of Theni and Tenkasi districts; Tirupur, Tirunelveli, hilly areas of Dindigul district and Kanyakumari district will experience heavy rain today and tomorrow,” the weather agency said.

Similarly, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at many places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts in Tamil Nadu, at a few places in other districts, Puducherry and Karaikal on July 31. Also, strong surface winds may blow at 30-40 km/h.

“Due to the change in the speed of the westerly wind in Tamil Nadu today (30.07.2024), there will be thunderstorms in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts and a couple of places in other districts, Puducherry and Karaikal areas. And light to moderate showers with lightning expected in Chennai,” the IMD said.

The sky will remain partly cloudy for the next 24 hours. Light/moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in a few parts of the city. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 37° Celsius and the minimum temperature is likely to be around 27-28° Celsius.
