Kerala to receive heavy downpour, public advised not to venture near river beds

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological department has predicted heavy rains and strong winds gusting at a speed of 50kmph in Kerala for the next three days with heavy down expected in northern districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasaragod.

The Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised tourists and locals not to venture near the river beds as water levels in most rivers are rising due to the rainfall. A yellow alert is been issued in all the 4 districts of Malabar region.

The IMD has also cautioned fisherman not to venture into the sea due to the presence of high tides and strong water currents. As per the weatherman, a low pressure is developed from the Kerala coasts up to the Gujarat coasts

Meanwhile on the rescue and search operations, nine more bodies were recovered from Mundakkai and Pothukallu region.

The army is focusing the operations in the landslide regions of Mundakkai and Choora Mala whereas local police, fire force, coast guard and the local rescuers including scuba divers are engaged in the search operations in Chaliyar and Iruvazhinji river in Kozhikode district.

The search operations is divided into 6 zones where there are 10 teams where each team member consists of 30 members of the army.

Rescue teams at Punchiri Mattom area are meticulously engaged in removing soil using earth moving machinery to recover the bodies.

Search operations and instructions will continue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the help of Cadaver dogs.

Meanwhile, there are nearly 9000 people staying in the various relief camps in the district. As per the health department 146 people have been identified till now in the various hospitals in Wayanad.

As per the latest data, 302 people have died and 206 people are found to be missing in the landslides that caused unimaginable disaster in Wayanad.
