Leon Marchand creates history, wins 4 gold medals at Paris Olympics to emulate Michael Phelps

New Delhi: French swimmer Leon Marchand has been enjoying an unbelievable run at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old has been on a gold-winning spree at the Games and has already shattered multiple records with as many as four gold medals at the showpiece event. Marchand capped off a ‘perfect week’ with a gold medal in the 200m individual medley on Friday.

In front of the home crowd with France President Emmanuel Macron also watching from the stands, Marchand created history after defeating Britain’s Duncan Scott and China’s Wang Shun to finish on top of the podium in the 200m individual medley. Marchand finished the race in an impressive 1 minute and 54.06 seconds, creating an Olympic record.

Leon Marchand equals Michael Phelp’s record

Marchand equalled the record of the legendary US swimmer Michael Phelps after winning her 4th gold medal on Friday as the Frenchman became the first male swimmer since the American to win four individual gold medals in swimming in a single edition of the Games. Phelps achieved the feat at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Marchand started his Paris Olympics campaign with a gold medal in the 200m butterfly category before finishing on top of the podium in the 200m breaststroke event. He also won a gold medal in the 400m individual medley before pocketing a record 4th gold medal in the 200m individual medley on Friday.

A perfect week for Leon Marchand

After failing to bag a single medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Marchand has been unstoppable in pairs this year. The home crowd at the La Defense Arena erupted in celebration after the French swimming prodigy finished on top of the podium in the 200m individual medley to win his 4th gold medal on Friday.

“I don’t think anything went wrong this week. It was just perfect,” said the 22-year-old after clinching his 4th gold.

While Marchand bagged the gold medal in the 200m individual medley, Britain’s Scott finished second to take the silver medal. Wang, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist, finished third to settle for a bronze medal.
