New Delhi: The Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won a Gold medal in the welterweight division at the Paris Olympics, she beat Chinese world champion Yang Liu by unanimous decision. Khelif dominated the fight as all five judges scored the match in her favor. After the win Chinese fighter, Yang raised Khelif’s arm into the air as Khelif’s opening bout against Italy’s Angela Carini was all controversial fight as she was referred as the ‘Biological male’ by the viewers.
Khelif started her Paris Olympics campaign with a controversial 46-second knock-out to Carini. Khelif didn’t lose any round as she defeated all the fighters with a 5-0 record in every match excluding the Knock-out to Carini. Khelif previously competed in the Tokyo Olympics where she lost in the quarter-finals but later she won the Gold medal at the Mediterranean Games 2022 and Arab Games 2023.
“I’m very happy. For eight years, this has been my dream, and now I’m the Olympic champion and gold medalist, “Eight years of work, no sleep. I want to thank all of the people in Algeria.” Khelif said after her win.
“I was born a woman, I lived a woman, I competed as a woman, there’s no doubt about that,” she added after winning the Gold medal
Khelif’s opponent in final bout Yang was the defending Champion in Paris Olympics as she won the Gold medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the welterweight division. It was redemption for Khelif about what she was going through in the Paris Olympics, she also missed the Boxing World Championship after failing a gender eligibility test as she has more male chromosomes but that doesn’t mean she is a biological male.
