New Delhi: New 100m champion Noah Lyles is glad he could compete even after testing positive for COVID during Paris Olympics and now wants has set his eyes on World Athletics Championships, which would be held in Tokyo in September next year.
Lyles claimed gold in 100m and then tested positive for COVID. An asthma patient, Lyles had fever but it didn’t stop him from claiming the bronze medal in 200m.
The American claims he wasn’t much concerned about body temperature but was more worried about bronchitis.
“Anytime I’ve had COVID, it’s never been about the temperatures. It’s always been about the body aches, the chills, the headaches and the cold,” Lyles was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.
“Then asthma joining in on that and making it even worst, that was our worst fear. “We were back in the medical bay underneath the track.
“Their biggest concern was me getting bronchitis because we didn’t want something to get infected and the asthma really starts to take form. We really had to jump on top of that,” he elaborated to The Associated Press.
His decision to race despite being COVID positive drew criticism as he could have infected others. But as the US Olympic team didn’t object, he wanted to compete in 200m, his pet distance.
The 27-year-old has now the World Athletics Championships in front of him, where he wants to assert his dominance in the sprint distances.
“I’m excited to see where the road takes me. And to be honest, I’m also excited to see what plans God has, because I can only think so far. But he has thought way further than I ever could,” he said.
