The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has said that the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is taking “crazy measures” that could escalate the conflict far beyond Ukraine’s borders. The SVR claims Zelensky’s actions are driven by a desire to maintain his position of power, calling his moves “reckless.”
The SVR’s statement comes as Ukraine continues its push into Russian territory, particularly in the Kursk region. Ukrainian forces reportedly control around 800 square kilometers (308 square miles) of Russian land, though this figure is disputed. Kyiv is claiming that it controls around 1,000 square kilometers. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the actual area under Ukrainian control might be less than the 1,000 square kilometers.
What is Zelensky saying?
Zelensky remains firm in his stance. In his nightly address, he justified the incursions, saying, “It is only fair to destroy Russian terrorists where they are, where they launch their strikes from.” He added that this approach could bring peace closer, emphasizing that “Russia brought war to others, and now it is coming home.”
“We see how useful this can be for bringing peace closer. Russia must be forced into peace if Putin wants to continue waging war so badly,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky also mentioned that he had received a briefing from Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyy on the ongoing operation in the Kursk region. The remarks by Zelensky and Syrskyy mark the first time any senior Ukrainian official has explicitly referred to the Kursk incursion by name.
As tensions rise, the situation remains fluid, with both sides offering differing accounts of the conflict’s scope and scale. As of now, it isn’t clear what average Russians make of the Ukrainian incursion.
