Four Indian junior wrestlers bag gold medals at U-17 Wrestling World Championships

New Delhi: In a major boost to Indian wrestling, four youngsters clinched gold medals at the ongoing Under-17 World Championships on Thursday at the Princess Sumaya Bint al-Hasan Arena in Amman, Jordan. Interestingly, all four wrestlers to achieve success in the junior level were women wrestlers.

Aditi Kumari (43kg), Neha (57kg), Pulkit (65kg) and Mansi Lather (73kg) won world titles with brilliance in their respective categories. Two more women wrestlers are in contention add to India’s medal tally with Kajal (69kg) and Shrutika Shivaji Patil (46kg) set to compete for their final bouts on Friday.

The day started with Aditi mauling Greece’s Maria Louiza Gkika with a commendable scoreline of 7-0 in the final of the 43kg. Later in the day, Neha trounced Japanese grappler So Tsuitsui while banking on her double-leg attacks to register a 10-0 win in the 57kg final.

Pulkit, Mansi adds to the ecstasy

In the 65kg final, Pulkit won by a margin of 6-3 against Daria Frolova, who competed as a neutal athlete at the event. Though Pulkit was in a commanding position at a stage with 5-0 lead, Frolova picked a pushout point along with a late caution to collect three points in the end. That wasn’t enough for the wrestler under AIN to spoil the party for her Indian counterpart who was vigilant with her defence in the last 20 seconds.

Mansi Lather started her final with utter dominance, rising to a 5-0 lead before pinning Hanna Pirskava in the 73kg final to win India’s fourth gold medal of the day.

India can bag more medals as Raj Bala (40kg) will compete in the bronze play-off while Muskan (53kg), Rajnita (61kg) are still in contention for podium finishes by making the repechage round.
India are now certain to win the women’s team trophy despite not fielding a wrestler in the 49kg weight class.

India also won two bronze medals in Greco Roman style with Ronak Dahiya and Sainath Pardhi (51kg) ending on podiums.
