New Delhi: Manu Bhaker created havoc in the Paris Olympics 2024 by winning two bronze medals in a single event. Now Indian fans have an eye on Paralympics 2024 which is starting from August 28. Indian shooter Avani Lekhara will be in the spotlight as she was the first Indian shooter to win two medals in an Olympic event in Tokyo 2020.
Lekhara won a Gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle and a bronze medal in the 50m Rifle three positions in the SH1 category. The SH1 category is for shooters who have lower limb disabilities like problems in hips, knees, legs, ankles, etc.
Lekhara showed mutual respect for Bhaker’s double-medal achievement in the Paris Olympics, She had an interview with SAI media where she addressed how to felt proud of Bhaker’s performance in the Paris Olympics.
“First of all I feel proud that we are both shooters. When I won two medals in Tokyo, it was a new awakening for women in sports in India… a barrier was broken. Manu did the same and going forward, I wish more such barriers are broken.” Lekhara said in the interview.
Lekhara is now more confident as she is heading to the Paris Paralympics 2024, she was on top in the Tokyo Paralympics and now she is also more mature and well-trained ahead of the Paralympics. She also praised the Union Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) that the unit was very supportive of his coaching, equipment, and training.
“It’s not about money or fame, the greatest takeaway in the post-Tokyo phase has been how my self-confidence has improved. From a shy introvert girl due to a disability to what I am today is a lot of change has happened for sure. Communication with various types of people have been personally enriching but the recognition and support that I am getting is the real success for me,” Lekhara added.
Lekhara will represent India in three shooting events and will try to go for medals in all three events, her previous best came in the previous Paralympics where she won two medals. India are sending 84 athletes to the Paris Paralympics in a total of 12 sports.
