New Delhi: Indian shooter Sarabjot Singh has been going from pillar to post after hogging the spotlight at the Paris Olympics 2024 last month. The 22-year-old shooter from Ambala has attended various events of governments, corporates and at regional levels.
On Tuesday, Sarabjot was present in Delhi as PUMA’s brand ambassador for the launch of the Race Day Tee for Delhi Half Marathon. He was joined by Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur on the stage.
The young shooter has received numerous photograph requests, reporters have queued to get insights about his journey, and he feels delighted upon knowing that someone is from Haryana or his neighbourhood city. He won’t resist to speak in his native Haryanvi for a line or two.
All thanks to his bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Manu Bhaker in the 33rd Summer Games in the French capital. However, Sarabjot went through the disappointment of missing out on qualification in the men’s 10m air pistol individual qualification round.
He finished ninth in the qualification round with a total score of 577 after a series of six shots. Though he was levelled with German shooter Robin Walter (both tied at 577), a lesser X (innermost area of the highest target) shot cost the Indian his spot in the final.
Sarabjot accounted for 16 X shots while Walter had 17. Three days later, the Indian youngster was on the podium of the mixed team event with Manu.
“I didn’t do much. Just focused on the diary I note. I keep noting in the diary what to do on a daily-basis like about my technique, training and strategies,” Sarabjot responded to a News9 query on the sidelines of a PUMA event.
“So that’s what I applied in the mixed team event. It was a bad luck as (the plan) didn’t work out in the individual event. The shots didn’t came well because most of them came close near the 10s,” he added.
What will Sarabjot Singh ask viral Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec?
Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec was the meme sensation in the Paris Games for his bold approach. Along with his partner Sevval Illayada Tarhan, the 51-year-old Yusuf claimed the silver in the mixed team event of the 10m air pistol.
Several gold medallists at the Paris Olympics, including pole vault world-record-breaker Armand Duplantis, celebrated their success with a shooting pose, which is now famous to recognise Yusuf Dikec. The world was stunned with the nonchalant approach of the five-time Olympian who doesn’t wear shooting kit and casually wears a T-shirt with only his pistol in his hand.
However, this isn’t a new experience for Sarabjot, who finished on the podium with the Turkish viral shooter at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre.
“I have seen one of his videos from 2012. He was the same then as well. The same weapon brand, without eye-blinder and without cap. There was no change from what we see him in the viral post. Main unko ek din puchunga ki aap kya khaate hon (I will ask him someday what do you eat),” Sarabjot quipped on asking what would his next interaction be.
Sarbjot Singh finished ninth in the qualification round with a total score of 577 after a series of six shots. Though he was levelled with German shooter Robin Walter (both tied at 577), a lesser X (innermost area of the highest target) shot cost the Indian his spot in the final.
