Amid protest threats, will BCCI shift 2nd Test against Bangladesh from Kanpur?

New Delhi: Despite threats of protest, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unlikely to shift the second Test between India and Bangladesh from the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. A protest has been planned by a right-wing outfit, Hindu Mahasabha which has expressed its disappointment over India hosting the Bangladesh cricket team amid violence against Hindus in their country.

There have been multiple reports of alleged violence against Hindus in Bangladesh in the last couple of weeks after the ouster of the former Prime Minister of the country Sheikh Hasina. Many Indian fans have also urged the BCCI to boycott the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh in the wake of the violence against Hindus.

The Hindu Mahasabha has threatened to protest in Kanpur against the Bangladesh team during the second Test which is scheduled to be played at the Green Park Stadium in the city. However, BCCI reportedly has no plans to change the venue at the last minute. The 2nd Test is scheduled to be played in Kanpur from September 27 to October 01.

As per a report in India Today, a BCCI official confirmed that there are no plans to change the venue. He also stated that the Indian cricket board is closely monitoring the situation and has taken all necessary measures to let the series continue as planned.

“Yes, we are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the concerned authorities. We have taken all necessary measures to ensure the match goes ahead as scheduled, and the stadium is fully prepared to host both teams,” the BCCI official was quoted as saying by India Today.

“The match is not going anywhere — it will be held in Kanpur. However, we will continue to keep an eye on developments, both in Kanpur and at the other venues,” he added.

Team India gearing up for the 1st Test in Chennai

Meanwhile, the Indian team is preparing for the series opener between the two teams at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 19. BCCI announced India’s 16-man squad for the 1st Test last week. The squad saw Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli making their comebacks in Tests while pacer Yash Dayal earned his maiden call-up.

Akash Deep and Sarfaraz Khan managed to retain their spots while KL Rahul also returned to the team. The Indian players will take part in a camp in Chennai ahead of the series opener.
