New Delhi: Valentina Shevchenko defeated Alexa Grasso and became the new women’s flyweight champion at UFC 306 Noche in the Sphere in Paradise, Nevada on September 15, Sunday. Shevchenko dominated the whole fight against Grasso as she won the fight via unanimous decision. Shevchenko showed her class with her grappling skills and put every time Grasso on her back.
Shevchenko made her personal best of eight takedowns in a single fight, she was close every time she went on to takedown the champion and attempted multiple submissions. The last fight between both fighters ended in a draw but this time Shevchenko dominated the fight and became the two-time women’s flyweight champion.
Shevchenko dominated all five rounds against the champion, Grasso had escaped multiple times from Shevchenko’s submission attempts. In the fourth round, Shevchenko made a massive guillotine choke to Grasso but somehow she escaped but Shevchenko didn’t give a single moment to Grasso to make any comeback in the bout.
Diego Lopez defeated No. 3 ranked Brian Ortega via unanimous decision. Lopez was No. 12 ranked in the featherweight division before the fight but he went on top on a no. 3 ranked Ortega. This will be one of the biggest wins in Lopez’s career, he made a clean sweep in the bout as all three judges gave a scorecard in favor of him in all three rounds.
Lopez started the fight with a bang and wobbled Ortega in the first minute of the fight itself. Lopez hit some heavy strikes and went on to finish Ortega in the first round but Ortega somehow survived in the first round. Ortega’s got a huge cut on his eyebrow and didn’t make any comeback in the fight.
In the second round, Lopez shifted his stance to southpaw and attacked the legs of Ortega, and dominated him in the second round. This was the best performance in Lopez’s career and he called out for his title shot after this big win. He also went on to win in the UFC 288 event with short notice and now he is on a 5-win streak.
