Prithvi Shaw dropped from Mumbai Ranji squad against Tripura, Suryakumar unavailable

New Delhi: Mumbai have dropped opening batter Prithvi Shaw for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura, starting on October 26 in Agartala. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Monday named a 16-member squad for their third round of Elite Group A game. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t part of the squad after featuring in their recent match against Maharashtra.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Suryakumar was unavailable for selection because of personal reasons. The middle order batter failed to create an impact for his quest to earn red-ball call back for India after getting  dismissed for seven runs in the only innings he batted for Mumbai in their nine-wicket win over Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Shaw hasn’t had a great start for the reigning Ranji champions. He made 7 and 12 in Mumbai’s 84-run-crushing defeat to Baroda to start their campaign on a shocking note. To add salt to that injury, the opener was pinned before the wickets by Maharashtra pacer Pradeep Dahade for just one run in the first innings, though he steered Mumbai past the finishing line with an unbeaten 39 in a minuscule chase of 74 runs.

Left-handed batter Akhil Herwadkar and left-arm spinner Karsh Kothari were roped in as replacements for Shaw and Suryakumar for Mumbai’s match against Tripura. Herwadkar hasn’t played a first-class game since December 2022 while Kothari made his last appearance for Mumbai in the ‘Whites’ in 2018.

Mumbai squad vs Tripura: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Akhil Herwadkar, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Suryansh Shedge, Hardik Tamore (wk), Siddhant Addhatrao (wk), Shams Mulani, Karsh Kothari, Himanshu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Avasthi, Mohammad Juned Khan, Royston Dias

Mumbai back on track with comprehensive win

Mumbai on Monday registered an outright nine-wicket win against Maharashtra to open their account in the points table. The 42-time Ranji champions, however, were denied of bonus point after opener Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for 15 by Maharashtra spinner Satyajeet Bachhav in the 74-run chase. In case a team wins by an innings or 10 wickets then they are awarded 7 points instead of six.

Defending champions Mumbai got their Ranji Trophy campaign back on track with an emphatic nine-wicket win over Maharashtra in their second Group A league game here on Monday, offsetting the heavy loss to Baroda in the opening game.

A clinical bowling performance by Shardul Thakur & Co inflicted a low-score collapse for Maharashtra on the first day. Mhatre (176) and star batter Shreyas Iyer (142) slammed prudent centuries to impose lead of 315 runs in the first innings.

Thanks to the resilience of Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (145), Ankit Bawne (101) and opener Sachin Dhas (98) to avoid a defeat by an innings. They were able to set a target after putting 388 on the board in the second innings.
