New Delhi: Former England all-rounder Michael Vaughan said that he wouldn’t be surprised to see England’s talisman James Anderson in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad after the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The IPL mega auction is back after three years and will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This will be the first time where an overseas country will stage a mega auction for the cash-rich league. A total of 1574 players have registered for the auction, including 1165 Indian players and 490 overseas players.
The most surprising name registered for the auction was of former England speedster James Anderson, who announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year in July. The Lancashire-based player hasn’t played the T20 format since 2014 and his last T20 International appearance was made in 2009.
However, Vaughan believes that his teammate be valuable to CSK’s pace department for his quality to swing the ball both ways.
“You mention James Anderson, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai Super Kings. You heard it here first. They are a team that like someone who can swing it in the first few overs. They had a swinger, be it Shardul Thakur,” Vaughan said on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast.
“It would not surprise me if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai,” he added.
James Anderson explains why he registered for IPL auction
Anderson is a veteran of 704 Test wickets, the third most for any bowler in the rich history of Test cricket behind Shane Warne (708) and Muttiah Muralitharan. One of the reasons for his prolonged red-ball career was the management of his workload. He sidelined from England’s white-ball squads after the 2015 World Cup.
Explaining his wish to turn up for the IPL mega auction, Anderson attributed to his keenness to play cricket again and said that the ambition won’t end even if he is ignored at the auction.
“That’s the whole point of going in the auction, I think, I want to play cricket again. Whether I get picked up or not is a different matter. There’s definitely a feeling inside of me that I’ve got more to offer, in some shape or form,” Anderson told Sky Sports.
“So, however long down the line that might be, in whatever capacity that might be I’m not sure yet. But I’m really keen to play. I feel really fit, I’ve been bowling still, ticking over, so I feel like I’m in a good place and I’d love to have an opportunity to play somewhere,” he added.
