New Delhi: The International Cricket Council will conduct an election to fill up its vacant chairman post in November, giving BCCI president Jay Shah three months to ponder whether to contest in it.
Shah is widely reported to be interested in the job but has remain tight lipped about his intentions. Incumbent chairman Greg Barclay has been in the postion for four years and received support from the BCCI to move to the position.
But a report in Cricbuzz suggests that despite Barclay being eligible for another term and might be interested too continue but should Shah decide to contest he would be elected unopposed to become the youngest chief of ICC.
The election for the hairman post won’t be on the ICC’s annual conference, which will be held in Colombo from July 19 to 22. But in it finalisation of a timeline for the election could happen.
Cricbuzz had earlier reported amendment of ICC’s constitution to change the tenure of chairman from existing three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each.
Should he become the ICC chairman, Shah would have to serve for at least three years from 2025 and would only be eligible to become BCCI’s president in 2028.
Reports in international media has also suggested that if elected, Shah could relocate ICC’s headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai and look to make changes within the ICC after the questionable manner in which the T20 World Cup was hosted in USA and the West Indies.
