UEFA Nations League: Key fixtures to look ahead on matchday 6 and where to watch?

New Delhi: The UEFA Nations League last entered its final matchday after a thrilling contest between the big teams on matchday five. Portugal, Netherlands and Italy have both booked a spot in the final eight of the tournament. England handed Greece their first loss to Greece in this year’s tournament.

Germany and defending champions Spain continued their dominating performance as the latter grabbed the top spot in the quarter-finals. Die Mannschaft ended matchday five with a 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. In matchday six, more thrilling games are lined up with the second leg of the fixtures. As big teams continue to fight, here’s a look at all that’s lined up for the next few days in the Nations League.

Italy vs France (November 18, 1:15 AM IST)

Italy will come to face France after securing a place in the final eight of the tournament. Despite some close calls, Italy ultimately came out as champions against Belgium, extending their undefeated streak since crashing out of UEFA Euro 2024. They will finish at the top of League A Group 2 if they can avoid losing the game against France team by two goals.

Les Bleus, on the other hand, didn’t have the best outing in November. After France’s skipper missed out from the squad for the second time in a row, manager Didier Deschamps was clearly frustrated after his side were stuck in a goalless draw against Israel. After losing their opening game against the Azzuri side, France won their three games in the competition. After their draw to the table bottomer, France clearly know that they are on the back foot.

Early prediction: Italy 2-1 France

Spain vs Switzerland

Given Spain’s recent performances, they were not at their best against Denmark, yet a disciplined outing saw them win 2-1, with both Mikel Oyarzabal and Ayoze Perez scoring for La Roja. Luis de la Fuente’s team has secured 13 points from five games and are six points ahead of the second-placed Denmark in Group Four of League A. Against Switzerland, they will hope to finish their final group game of the Nations League on a positive note, having not lost a competitive game since March 2023.

Switzerland never got the momentum on their side after losing their first three games in the tournament. They then drew 2-2 against Denmark and played a 1-1 draw this weekend against Serbia. Switzerland has now been relegated to League B and hasn’t won a single game across competition since their final 16 win over Italy in Euros 2024.

Early prediction: Spain 2-0 Switzerland

Hungary vs Germany

When Hungary host Germany, they will be the obvious weaker side. They will be coming to the draw after a 4-0 humbling defeat from the Netherlands, outdone by the Dutch side in every department. After this game they will be involved in a promotion/relegation playoff in order to retain their top-tier spot. With the ghosts of 5-0 loss to Germany back in September still haunting, the timing of this fixture couldn’t be at a more perfect time.

For Germany, though, only a single point would have been enough to ensure that they sealed the top spot in the Nations League group. However, the German side looked fierce when they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0, in what was their third consecutive win across comeptition. For Germany, they recorded the most emphatic win that Nations League had ever seen. The win also ensures Germany’s first appearance in the tournament’s knockout stage

Early prediction: Hungary 0-4 Germany
