‘A leader not a captain’: Suryakumar Yadav on retired Rohit Sharma’s T20I excellence

New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav, who has officially taken charge as Team India’s T20I skipper, is not running short of words at all for the World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma, whom he replaced for the role. Both have spent enough time on the field together and the new skipper has revealed that he got to learn a lot from the veteran who will now focus on Tests and ODIs. Hailing him for his leadership qualities, SKY said that he has taken inspiration from his senior for his upcoming stint.

Suryakumar will lead India in a three-match T20I series that begins on July 27 in Pallekele. As they are saying, Team India has begun a new era under new head coach Gautam Gambhir and the new T20I skipper as well. The combination has generated significant hype and fans are anticipating their outing together. Ahead of the series opener, along with Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka, SKY addressed the media during the pre-match press conference on Friday.

Talking in depth about how he is taking the new role and trying to adapt to it, SKY did not fail to recognise the contribution made by Rohit Sharma through his leadership qualities for India. He asserted that Rohit was not a captain but a leader who “showed people the way.”

“I always think that what I have learnt from Rohit Sharma, he was always like a leader on the ground and off the field. He was not like a captain. There are a lot of differences in both. There was a leader who was standing in the middle of the group, and he showed people the way, how to play this T20 cricket and how to win the tournament,” the explosive batter said.

A dream come true – Surya

He further said that every player in the nation dreams of representing India and do good for it which was his first dream as well. Once it gets accomplished, the next aim is to win matches for India, he stressed. “Then it remains in your dream that if you become the captain, then how will you win India after playing against good teams. So this is also another dream that has come true. And it feels good,” he added.

The second and third T20Is will be played in Pallekele as well on July 28 and July 30 respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav heaped massive praise on ex-skipper Rohit Sharma for his leadership qualities in the T20 cricket as he bid adieu to the shortest format after India’s T20 World Cup triumph last month.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
