New Delhi: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Monday announced the postponement of the second edition of the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup tournament, earlier scheduled to kick off from June 6, citing adverse weather conditions and public health concerns in the host nation, Sri Lanka. The decision came after the ACC held consultations over a letter received from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board president Shammi Silva, seeking postponement of the event.

Silva wrote to ACC president Mohsin Raza Naqvi, citing adverse weather conditions in Sri Lanka and health concerns owing to the spread of chikungunya disease in the region, as stated by the ACC in a statement. Last week, the meteorological department of Sri Lanka issued a weather advisory warning of strong winds and heavy showers across multiple regions in the country due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon.

Naqvi, who also helms the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as its chairman, said that the continental body values the importance of promoting women’s cricket and nurturing emerging talent in the region. “The ACC is committed to providing opportunities for young women cricketers to develop their skills and compete at the highest level,” he said.

“We understand the strategic significance of this tournament in shaping the future of women’s cricket in Asia, and we will work diligently to reschedule the event at the earliest possible date,” Naqvi added while affirming that the ACC will announce the new dates for the event in due course.

The inaugural edition of the tournament was held in Hong Kong in 2023, where India A beat Bangladesh A by 31 runs in the final to be crowned as champions. Shreyanka Patil was adjudged the Player of the Series then. Eight teams had participated in the tournament, and a total of 15 matches were played, including the knockouts.

Will India participate?

Last month, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had clarified that the Indian board had not communicated any decision to the ACC regarding India’s participation in the Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup. India are due to host the six-team men’s Asia Cup in September this year.

According to news agency PTI, a reliable source close to the ACC had said that there were serious doubts about whether the men’s Asia Cup T20 tournament would be held in September because of the recent border conflict between India and Pakistan.

“Don’t see the Asia Cup happening because given the situation, it would be difficult for the BCCI to get the clearance from its government to host the event and invite the Pakistan team to India,” PTI quoted the source as saying.
