New Delhi: Following the 2025 tournament’s group stage draw, Mohamed Salah and Egypt were informed of their AFCON fate. Alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe, Salah’s Egypt have been assigned to Group B. The Pharaohs’ adventure will start on December 22 at the AFCON 2025 against the Bafana Bafana, who eliminated Morocco, the semi-finalists of the 2022 World Cup, from the round of 16 in the last African competition.
Last year, Egypt and Salah were left heart-broken when they were surprisingly eliminated by Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 16. The Pharoahs managed to lose the match in penalties after the scorr remained 1-1 during normal time. However, they will be determined to win this year’s competition and maintain their reputation of being the best team in this competition. They have already lifted the trophy seven times before, most by any African nation, and they will have their sights set for an eighth one this year.
Ademola Lookman, the current African Player of the Year and star of Atalanta, will play for Nigeria in Group C against Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia. With players like Lookman and Victor Osimhen spearheading the attack, Nigeria, who lost to Ivory Coast in the previous edition’s final, would be among the favorites to win the trophy again.

After a series of World Cup qualification matches, Egypt will be beginning their journey in pursuit of their eighth AFCON trophy when they face Zimbabwe on 22nd December 2025, as their opening game of the tournament. Mohamed Salah and Egypt will then face a tough competition from former champions South Africa, when the two nations will be going head to head against each other on 26th December.
Bafana’s most recent Afcon match against the Pharaohs took place in 2019. The former performed admirably and ultimately defeated the favorites and hosts. Hossam Hassan is expecting a difficult battle in the pool, but Hugo Broos thinks Egypt have what it takes to finish at the summit. Egypt will complete their group stage games against Angola on 30th December.
