New Delhi: The Indian badminton team will undergo a five-day training camp for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati.
Top names including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Paris Games semi-finalist Lakshya Sen would spearhead the 14-member Indian team, also featuring Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with HS Prannoy, a World and Asian Games bronze medallist.
The preparatory camp will be held from February 4-8 for the tournament thay will be played in Qingdao, China, from February 11-16. India had claimed the bronze medal in its last edition in 2023.
Badminton Association of India secretary Sanjay Mishra hoped the camp would provide valuable exposure to youngsters in the team as they would have the chance to train with the country’s elite players at the NCE.
“The NCE has been focusing on grooming the upcoming juniors since its inception and hosting a senior team camp here will also allow the juniors an opportunity to learn from the country’s finest while also providing India’s top talents to train together and create an ideal environment of team bonding ahead of this big team event,” said Mishra.
“In addition to the technical skills that will be imparted, the camp is designed to strengthen values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship among the team members. The players will have a complete development experience that prepares them for the challenges ahead,” he added.
All eyes on Sindhu
Sindhu would return to the international circuit after getting married in December last year and would be keen to get a fresh start after underwhelming performances in the last few events.
She failed to win in the Indian Open in New Delhi, after which she got married. Injuries and loss of form has kept Sindhu away from silverware for quite a while as she couldn’t reach the podium at Paris Olympics.
The Indian team would be leving for China on February 8.
