Jasprit Bumrah adds another feather to his cap, joins Kapil Dev in elusive list

New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah can’t stop taking wickets. The Indian speedster added one more wicket to his tally in what has been a remarkable year for the star bowler. Bumrah drew first blood in the Australian innings and dismissed a dangerous Usman Khwaja for 13 in the 11th over. Fresh from a match-winning spell in the Perth Test, Bumrah continued his wicket-taking run at the Adelaide Oval and got rid of the Australian opener.

India’s new ball bowlers failed to get a breakthrough in the first 10 overs as Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney held the fort firmly. But Bumrah worked his magic and removed Khawaja with a peach of a delivery. Bowling from around the wicket, Bumrah bowled a superb delivery that straightened after pitching and took the outside edge of Khawaja’s bat. The ball flew into the hands of Rohit Sharma, who completed the catch at first slip.

Landmark wicket for Jasprit Bumrah on his 31st birthday

It was a landmark wicket for Bumrah who became only the third Indian seamer to pick 50+ wickets in a calendar year on his 31st birthday. Bumrah gave himself the perfect birthday gift by joining legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev in the elusive list which also features Zaheer Khan.

Indian seamers with 50+ wickets in a calendar year

74 – Kapil Dev (1979)
75 – Kapil Dev (1983)
51 – Zaheer Khan (2002)
50 – Jasprit Bumrah (2024) *

While Kapil Dev’s 75-wicket haul is hard to surpass, Bumrah’s current average of 15.14 is the best among the 16 occasions Indians who have bagged 50+ wickets in a calendar year.

Reddy, Starc shine

Earlier, Australian pacer Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc with the pink ball to bag his maiden five-wicket haul against India in Test cricket. Starc took a career-best haul of six wickets for 48 runs to help Australia bundle India out for 180 runs in 44.1 overs. Nitish Reddy top-scored for India with a blazing knock of 42 runs.

Virat Kohli (7 off 8 balls) and Rohit Sharma (3 off 23) both failed to fire while KL Rahul (37), Shubman Gill (31) and Rishabh Pant (21) all failed to convert the starts into a big total.

Reddy, who made an impactful debut in Perth, added crucial runs alongside Ravichandran Ashwin (22 off 22), who came in to replace Washington Sundar.

AUS vs IND: Jasprit Bumrah continued his exceptional form, picking up the important wicket of Usman Khawaja and achieved another big feat in his stellar career.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
