Aiden Markram’s sizzling knock keeps South Africa afloat in Centurion Test

New Delhi: Seasoned batter Aiden Markram continued his superb run on the second day of the Centurion Test match against Pakistan as well, after his heroics saved South Africa on the first day. The hosts lost as many as three wickets in the last session of play on Day 1 but Markram stood tall on 47 when stumps were called.

Resuming from his overnight score, the Proteas batter showcased courage and class and continued standing tall for the team with a powerful innings at the SuperSport Park. With wickets tumbling from the other end for the hosts, Markram seemed to be undeterred as he played typical Test cricket to help his side secure a small first innings lead, which seemed to be far-fetched at some point of time. Unfortunately, the batter remained 11 short of a century, losing his wicket on 89 off 144 balls.

Markram plays role of lone warrior

After Proteas bowlers did magic with the ball in stopping Pakistan to a first innings score of 211, batters failed to showcase equal courage as their wickets fell like a pack of cards. Skipper Temba Bavuma, who has a batting average of over 60 in Tests in the year 2024, also could not stand in front of the Pakistan bowlers as he lost his wicket for 31 runs. Markram showed maturity and patience playing the role of a lone warrior to steer South Africa’s innings and get them to a small lead.

The Test match is of huge importance for South Africa as they need to win one of the two test matches against Pakistan to seal a place in the final of the World Test Championship at Lord’s next year.
