AIIMS study finds over 15% young children in India have hypertension, check contributing factors

New Delhi: Hypertension or high blood pressure is not only just a common problem among adults but now it has become quite concerning among young adults too. Recently a study led by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) discovered that the early onset of hypertension among children and adolescents is becoming a pressing problem.

The experts of AIIMS highlighted the increasing prevalence of high blood pressure in youth and stressed on the importance of early detection and diagnosis.

Describing how disturbing this trend is, Dr Sumit Malhotra, Professor, Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS said, around 15 to 20 per cent of children and adolescents who are among the age group of 10 to 19 years have hypertension rate that is way more than what is normal at their age. The situation is alarming according to Dr Malhotra as high blood at this age can lead to serious health complications such as brain strokes, heart or cardiovascular problems and retinal issues, reported IANS.

High blood pressure is a major concern

One of the major challenges that was identified by the experts was the lack of awareness about high blood pressure levels among kids. Due to the lack of knowledge and awareness,  many individuals remain unaware of their condition and even people who are aware do not seek treatment for it. Moreover, high blood pressure at a young age may pose serious health threats.

Factors contributing to high blood pressure

According to experts, several risk factors may contribute to high blood pressure among the youth currently, including genetic predispositions, early tobacco use, putting on excess weight, being physically inactive, and sedentary lifestyles.

Hypertension is the major risk factor and the leading cause of premature deaths, especially among the younger populations. As per the study, controlling blood pressure can significantly minimise the dangers of heart attacks and strokes.
