New Delhi: Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed recently made bizarre remarks about his role in the team as he insisted he is a tail-ender, not an all-rounder. Iftikhar, who is a white-ball specialist for Pakistan, appeared to have been left frustrated by consistently being sent out to bat in the lower-middle order by the team management as he snapped at the reporter, who called him a middle-order batter.
Iftikhar spoke to reporters during a media interaction in Faisalabad ahead of the start of the Champions Cup One-Day tournament in Pakistan which will feature the top cricketers in the country. Opening up on his role in the team, Iftikhar said middle-order batters usually bat number 4 or 5. However, he bats at no.7 or 8 and thus considers himself a tailender.
“Main middle order ka player nahi hu lower order ka hu. Main all-rounder nahi hu tail-ender hu kyunki aap dekho mai 7th ya 8th number pe khelta hu (I am not a middle order batter, I am a lower order batter. I am not an all-rounder but a tail-ender because I play at no.7 or 8 usually),” Iftikhar told the reporter.

Having made his international debut in 2015, Iftikhar has been in and out of the Pakistan team throughout his career and has failed to cement his spot in the side. He has played 4 Tests, 28 ODIs and 66 T20Is for Pakistan with 1673 runs and 25 wickets to his name across formats. With new talented youngsters emerging in Pakistan cricket, Iftikhar faces intense competition to keep his spot in the national team.
However, Iftikhar remains hopeful of fending off competition and continue playing for Pakistan across formats. The all-rounder stressed he is also hopeful of making a comeback in Test cricket for Pakistan and is preparing for the same.
