New Delhi: Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on Saturday, August 24. Dhawan last played for Team India in the ODI series against Bangladesh in 2022. He shared a long video message on Instagram and thanked his fans for all the love and support throughout his career.
“I always had one goal in mind that was to play for India and I achieved it thanks to a lot of people. First of all my family, my childhood coach Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under their guidance, I learnt cricket. Then my entire team with whom I played for years, got another family, fame and everyone’s love and support. As it’s said that to move ahead in the story you need to flip over the pages. Hence, I’m also doing that, I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket” Dhawan said in the video.

He made his international debut in the ODI series against Australia in Visakhapatnam but didn’t have a great start to his career. However, after some failures at the start, Dhawan made his comeback to the team in 2013 and sealed his spot after brilliant performances in all three formats.
Many celebrities and cricketers commented on Dhawan’s retirement post and congratulated him for his outstanding career. Team India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav also commented on Dhawan’s retirement Instagram post and wrote “Congratulations Sikhiiii paaaaa and all the love and luck for the next innings”. Suryakumar is currently enjoying his break from cricket and will be back in action against Jammu and Kashmir in the Buchi Babu Tournament on August 27.
Shikhar Dhawan’s career in number
Dhawan registered his name in the records book by scoring the fastest hundred on Test debut in just 85 balls. He also won the ‘golden bat’ for scoring the most runs in the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017. Dhawan was also the highest run scorer for India in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
He played 167 ODIs for India and scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11, including seven centuries and five fifties. Dhawan also scored 1759 runs in 68 T20Is at a strike rate of 126.36 including 11 fifties. He has scored 2315 runs in 34 Test matches at an average of 40.61.
