Anousheh Ansari: First female space tourist and first Muslim woman to go into space

New Delhi: Space tourism has picked up pace in recent years, albeit the fact that it is still very much limited to the elite class of society. Born on September 12, 1966, Anousheh Ansari from Iran was the first female space tourist. Also, she was the first Muslim woman to go into space and also the first one to blog from there. All these are impressive feats, isn’t it? In this article, we will take a look at the life of Ansari, the woman who has created records in space.

First female space tourist who witnessed chaos at home

Ansari has been very curious about space since her childhood in Iran. In 1979, she witnessed the Iranian Revolution and heard gunshots, screaming, explosions and people being killed. She would hide in the basement of her apartment building from the days of the Revolution until the Iran-Iraq War. She was the eldest child in the basement and would comfort others by narrating stories. In 1984, she migrated to the US as a teenager and attended a high school in Northern Virginia. She is fluent in Persian, English and French and has a working knowledge of Russian.

When did Ansari go to space?

Ansari arranged to participate in spaceflight through Space Adventures, Ltd., which is a space tourism company. According to estimates, Ansari paid around $20 million to take part in the mission. She started her spaceflight training in Star City, Russia in early 2006. Initially, she trained as a backup for Enomoto Daisuke, a Japanese businessman. But later, Enomoto was disqualified on medical grounds and Ansari replaced him on the flight crew of Soyuz TMA-9. She lifted off on the Soyuz TMA-9 mission on September 18, 2006, from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur.

She spent eight days at the International Space Station and performed several experiments regarding human physiology for the European Space Agency. Also, she was interviewed on the national television of Iran while she was in space. Also, she published dispatches and answered questions on her blog during her stay at the International Space Station. Notably, she was the first person to blog from space. On September 29, 2006, she returned to Earth.
