Virat Kohli breaks Tendulkar’s record to become fastest to 27000 international runs

New Delhi: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli on Monday became the fastest batter to complete 27,000 runs in international cricket across formats. He achieved the milestone during the fourth day of the ongoing second Test match at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Ahead of the second Test, Kohli was just 35 runs short of reaching the landmark. He smashed Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam for a six straight down the pitch in the 25th over of the Indian innings. A single to long-on the final ball of the innings made him the fastest batter in international cricket to achieve 27,000 runs in 594 innings. He bettered Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar’s record in 623 innings.

Kohli was dismissed for 47 runs in the rain-curtailed second Test while attempting to play a swipe against Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan. He missed the hit, and as a result, the ball crashed into his stumps. The former Indian captain has now scored 27,012 runs in 594 innings.

Breakdown of Virat Kohli’s 27000+ international runs

Virat Kohli has made 8918 runs in 194 Test innings at an average of 48.73. He finished his T20 international career with 4188 runs in 117 innings at a strike rate of 137.04. With 13906 runs in 283 innings, the star Indian batter is the third highest run-getter in the 50-over format behind Tendulkar (18426) and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (14234). He has the second most centuries (80) in international cricket only behind Tendulkar’s incredible 100 tons.

Kohli is just 82 runs away from completing 9000 runs in Test cricket, though he won’t have the bragging rights to be the fastest batter to reach the milestone. Sangakkara holds the record in 172 innings while former India bater Rahul Dravid completed the mark in 176 innings.

The Indian batter missed the opportunity to hit his first half-century of the series after scoring 6 and 17, respectively, in the first Test in Chennai, which India won by 280 runs to take a 1-0 lead. He hasn’t made a fifty-plus score since last five Test innings. His last Test half-century came against South Africa in Centurion in December 2023.
