Arjun Erigaisi becomes second Indian to cross 2800 Elo rating after Viswanathan Anand

New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has become only the second chess player from the country to achieve the benchmark ELO rating of 2800 as he secured the fourth position in the latest FIDE rankings updated on Sunday.

The Warangal-born player has been in a red hot form in 2024, having won an individual gold medal and doubled it with the men’s team gold medal at the Chess Olympiad. He won WR Chess Masters Cup in London in October after outplaying Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The top-ranked Indian chess player has now achieved 2801 rating points to move to the fourth spot after Americans Hikaru Nakamura (2802), Fabiano Caruana (2805) and Norweigan Magnus Carlsen (2831) claims the pole position. Arjun joined five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand to cross the 2800 Elo rating points.

“Arjun Erigaisi has become the 16th player in history to break the 2800 Elo barrier in classical chess ratings!” the world governing body of the sport FIDE said on ‘X’.

“Arjun Erigaisi joins five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand as the second Indian to achieve this milestone. In the December 2024 #FIDERating list, his rating stands at 2801, and he is currently ranked #4 in the world!” the post added.

On November 8, Erigaisi reached the World No.2 ranking after win over Russia’s Alexey Sarana at the Chennai Grand Masters.

Born in Warangal, Telangana, Erigaisi earned the Grandmaster’s title at the age of 14 years, 11 months, 13 days. In September 2024, he became India’s top rated player.

Gukesh Dommaraju, who is currently in contest with China’s Ding Liren for the World Championship trophy in Singapore, is ranked fifth in the world with Elo rating of 2783. Liren’s ranking is currently at 22nd place with 2728 rating.
