AUS vs IND 4th Test, BGT: Why are the Indian players wearing black armbands at MCG?

New Delhi: Team India players are wearing black armbands on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, December 27 to honour former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night.

Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. He passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. Dr. Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday evening after he fell unconscious at his residence due to health issues related to his advanced age but was pronounced dead in a statement released by the hospital.

Australia 454/7 at lunch on Day 2

The Aussies resumed play on Day 2 with their overnight of 311/6 at the MCG. Steve Smith and Pat Cummins stitched a 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Smith notched up his 34th Test hundred and his fifth century at the MCG. Ravindra Jadeja removed Cummins on 49 but Smith and Starc forged another 43-run partnership for the eighth wicket at lunch.

Earlier on Day 1, Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja forged an 89-run partnership for the first wicket after the hosts opted to bat first. Jadeja removed Konstas on 60 runs and provided India with their first breakthrough.

Usman Khawaja scored his half-century but Bumrah dismissed him on 57 runs. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne stitched an 83-run partnership for the third wicket. Bumrah and Sundar picked up important wickets as Rohit and Co. made a comeback in the match. The Aussies lost quick wickets in the last session of Day 1.

Sundar dismissed Labuschagne on 72 runs while Bumrah removed Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh cheaply. Akash Deep also picked his first wicket of the match and removed Alex Carey on 31 runs.
