New Delhi: Australia defeated India by 5 wickets in the first women’s ODI match at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on December 5, Thursday. Megan Schutt took five wickets as the Women in Blue bowled out for 100 runs. The Aussies chased down the 101-run target in 16.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll forged a 48-run partnership for the opening wicket to put the visitors under pressure. Renuka Singh dismissed Litchfield on 35 runs and provided India with their first breakthrough. Renuka also removed Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney cheaply while Priya Mishra dismissed Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner. Debutant Georgia Voll played a stunning knock, scoring unbeaten 46 runs off 42 balls and helped her team to win the match by 5 wickets.

Megan Schutt picks fifer as India crumbled for 100 runs
India opting to bat first after winning the toss and the decision backfired quickly as Schutt dismissed both openers cheaply in the first seven overs. The Indian batters struggled to score runs as the Australian fast bowlers got a lot of assistance from the surface. Rodrigues scored 23 runs off 42 balls and was the top scorer for India while Harleen Deol also scored 19 runs off 34 balls.
The lower-order batters also failed to make any contribution with the bat as Harmanpreet and Co. bowled out for 100 runs in 34.2 overs. Schutt picked her first five-wicket haul in ODI cricket while Kim Garth, Ashleigh Gardner, Annabel Sutherland and Alana King also took one wicket each. The Women in Blue will look to make comeback in the series in the second ODI which will be played at the same venue on 8 December, Sunday.
