New Delhi: Australia defeated hosts Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the the second Test in Galle on Sunday, to sweep the series 2-0 and register their first win in the country in 14 years.
The Aussies were set a target of 75 runs to win and they lost only Travis Head on way to a dominating victory before lunch on the fourth day.
Opener Usman Khawaja (27 not out) and No.3 batter Marnus Labuschagne (26 not out) remained unbeaten as Australia lost Travis Head (20) to their reach their victory target in 17.4 overs.
Labuschagne scored the winning run with a single through square leg off Dimuth Karunaratne to send him into retirement with a defeat as Australia completed their first series win in Sri Lanka since 2011.
Sri Lanka could add only 20 runs to their overnight score of 211/8 to be dismissed for 231 in their second innings.
Australia premier spinner Nathan Lyon claimed 4/84 to improve his overall tally tos 553 Test wickets. Beau Webster (2/6) took the final two wickets as he removed Kusal Mendis (50) and Lahiru Kumara (9) respectively.
In his 100th and last Test match, Karunaratne fell to Matthew Kuhnemann (4/63) for 14 in his final Test innings on the third day, after scoring 36 on the openng day.
He ended his Test career with 7,222 runs, to be fourth on Sri Lanka’s all-time run-scoring list behind Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews.
