New Delhi: Australia have confirmed their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final on Sunday after outplaying India in the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Australia won the five-Test series 3-1 to not just regain the BGT after 10 years but also bolster their position in the WTC standings.
Australia have played 17 Test matches in the current WTC cycle thus far, having won 11 matches, lost three and drew two to accumulate 130 points and a win percentage of 63.73. The Pat Cummins-led side has finished second on the standings behind South Africa, who lead the charts with a 66.67 win per cent.
Australia have two more Test matches left to be played against Sri Lanka in the ongoing 2023-2025 cycle. However, they remain as inconsequential after their recent triumph in Sydney. Sri Lanka won’t get any contention as they hold a win percentage of 45.45 and even a 2-0 result against Australia won’t put them past their total win percentage in this WTC cycle.
India knocked out of WTC cycle race
The Indian men’s cricket team for the first time won’t play the World Test Championship final since the first edition took place in 2021. India played 19 Test matches in the cycle, winning nine, suffering eight defeats, and two draws were involved.
India started their campaign with a 1-0 win against the West Indies in July 2023. They drew 1-1 against South Africa in the rainbow nation before humbling England 4-1 on home soil in February 2024. The home dominance continued with 2-0 win against Bangladesh.
The setback for India was the humiliating 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, which also ended their 18-straight Test series winning streak at home in 12 years. Their hopes dished out after the recent defeat against Australia, where they had to win at least four Tests for an outright chance.
