New Delhi: Participating thousands of miles away in Australia, Naomi Osaka has revealed that she sent someone to grab her daughter’s birth certificate from their California home as a precaution against the rampant Los Angeles wildfires.

Speaking after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory against Caroline Garcia in the opening round at the Australian Open, Osaka revealed that a fire was burning just three blocks from her home in Los Angeles and she sent someone to retrieve her daughter Shai’s birth certificate to avoid any potential loss.

“I learned that there was a fire burning three blocks from my house,” Osaka shared. “I figured it would be a good idea to keep the birth certificate safe.”

Osaka sends heartfelt wishes back home

The wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area have destroyed thousands of homes and claimed at least 24 lives. The four-time Grand Slam champion expressed her concern over the devastating fires following the post-match interaction.

“Sending all my love to LA. We hear about fires, but I didn’t know how devastating it could be,” she said.

Osaka joined the long list of players at the Australian Open athletes, including Coco Gauff and Donna Vekic, to speak on the LA tragedy.

Osaka also opened up on the personal challenges she’s faced off the court, including the break-up with Shai’s father, rapper Cordae. The former world number one player who has won four Grand Slam titles – two at the Australian Open and two at the U.S. Open – was born in Japan but her family moved to the USA when she was 3. She has lived in Los Angeles for several years.

In a remarkable coincidence, Osaka faced Garcia in the opening round of the Australian Open for the second straight year. The former top-ranked player faced off against the U.S. Open semifinalist at Melbourne Park last year when Osaka had only recently returned from maternity leave and suffered a first-round exit from the tournament.
