New Delhi: Colombia captain James Rodriguez has signed with Mexican club Leon, with the Liga MX club confirming the news on Monday. The 33-year-old recently became a free agent after terminating his contract with Rayo Vallecano and will now join Leon, who are set to start their Clausura phase of the season on January 18th.
His La Liga side, in a statement, confirmed that the two parties had reached an agreement for Roriguez’s transfer, though they refrained from giving any details about the deal. They wish the Colombian international the best of luck for the new phase in his career. Across their social media platforms, eight-time Mexican champion Leon posted photos of Rodriguez but didn’t give any details of the deal as well.

This June, Leon will also be taking part in the Club World Cup, starting their campaign with games against Chelsea, Esperance de Tunis and Flamengo. Rodriguez’s move to Leon is his sixth move since 2021 having played for Rayo Vallencano, Sao Paulo, Olympiacos, Al-Rayyan and Everton in recent times and also the sixth consecutive season that he has been released on a free transfer.
In the past, Rodriguez was known for his high-profile runs while playing for big teams like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Before coming to Madrid in 2014, he had played for Enviagado, Banfield, Porto and Monaco. There is a constant viewpoint that while Rodriguez may not be in his prime, at the international level, he somehow thrives.
If stats were to be compared, since leaving Everton, he has only played 37 league games and scored just 10 times. However, in the same timeframe, he has played 32 times for Colombia, and while he often doesn’t play the entire duration of the games for his national team, he has been one impactful team. Rodriguez seems to be someone who rather enjoys the national duty, unlike most players, and club football is just to keep him sharp for Colombia.
Making 112 appearances for Colombia, Rodriguez has scored 29 times, winning the Golden Boot in the 2014 World Cup. He had an incredible run with the Colombian team in last summer’s Copa America where his side ultimately lost to Argentina in the final.
James Rodriguez makes his sixth move since 2021 after being released by Rayo Vallecano as a free agent as he now joins Mexican club Leon during the January transfer period. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
