Australia squad for UK tour: Pat Cummins rested, Jake Fraser-McGurk included in T20Is vs England, Scotland

New Delhi: Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has been rested from their tour of United Kingdom later this year. Australia are scheduled to play three T20 Internationals against Scotland from September 4 to 7 followed by the white-ball series against England, wherein they play three T20Is and five One-Day Internationals.

Cummins, who led Australia to their sixth ODI World Cup trophy in India last year, will miss the complete tour of United Kingdom. Senior pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will miss the T20Is against Scotland and England but will link up with the squad for the ODI series.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who led Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024, will lead the side in ODIs in Cummins’ absence besides continuing his role in the shorter format.

Youngsters included in T20Is as Australia look to build new squad

Australian selectors have roped in some new faces in the T20I squad, apparently forming a new squad after failure to reach the last four in the T20 World Cup last month in the USA and West Indies.

Perth Scorchers 20-year-old sensation Cooper Connolly and Jakes Fraser-McGurk, who displayed explosive batting for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, have been included in the 14-member T20I squad for the six matches against Scotland and England.

Connolly has been a fine finisher for the Scorchers, striking at 145.81 in his last two seasons of the Big Bash League. He can offer left-arm spin as well, having picked six wickets from 15 T20 matches at an economy of 7. Meanwhile, Fraser McGurk smashed 330 runs in nine innings for Delhi Capitals at a staggering strike rate of 234.04 with the help of five half-centuries and a ton. The Victorian batter will be the future for Australia in T20Is after David Warner called his time with the national team across formats last month.

The likes of Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa, Travis Head, and Tim David will continue to be key around Marsh in T20Is. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are part of the ODI squad with the selectors looking at the ICC Champions Trophy in February-March window next year.
