New Delhi: The Australian Open 2025 got underway on Sunday, January 12. The likes of Novak Djokovic, defending champion Janik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will be among the top contenders in men’s singles. 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will start the tournament as one of the favourites having lifted the Australian Open title a record 10 times in his career so far.
The Serbian ace will be aiming to add a record-extending 11th Australian Open title to his tally and shatter Margaret Court’s record to become the first player in history to win 25 Grand Slam crowns. Djokovic, the most successful male player in tennis history, is currently tied with Court having won 24 Grand Slams and is chasing an elusive 25th title at his happy hunting ground – the Australian Open.
Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, 37-year-old Djokovic has an incredible track record at the Australian Open having won the tournament 10 times without losing a final. However, he will be up against the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner, who are set to present him with a strong challenge in the tournament.
Djokovic will open his campaign against USA’s Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round on Monday, January 13. 20-year-old Basavareddy, a Sanford University student, turned professional in December last year and is heading into the Australian Open after playing two ATP 250 events. He will be up against Djokovic on his Australian Open debut on Monday.
