New Delhi: The 50th anniversary of seven-time Grand Slam singles champion John Newcombe’s second Australian Open win features on match coin of the tournament’s 2025 edition.

The coin was launched by the Australian himself and would be used prior to every match at the Australian Open. Newcombe tossed the coin before the first match between World No.5 Qinwen Zheng and Anca Todoni at Rod Laver Arena.

Newcombe, winner of two Australian Open singles tiles in 1973 and 1975, received a warm greeting from the stands in a fitting celebration of his decorated career and lasting legacy.

“It’s an incredible honour to be featured on this year’s Australian Open coin,” Newcombe said.

“The Australian Open holds a special place in my heart, and it’s wonderful to connect my memories of this tournament with the young kids stepping onto the court for the first time.

“Tennis is a sport that brings people together, and seeing the passion in these young players reminds me of why I fell in love with the game all those years ago.”

Distinguished career

Apart from two Australian Open titles, the 80-year-old Newcombe won Wimbledon three times (1967, 1970, 1971) and US Open twice (1967, 1973) in a 15-year-career.

Known for his powerful serve, accurate volleys and never-say-die spirit, Newcombe is a much loved figure in Australian tennis as apart from his singles achievements, he won 17 Grand Slams in doubles in a record-setting partnership with Tony Roche.

He also led Australia to Davis Cup triumph in 1999 and was has been inducted in Australian and International Tennis Halls of Fames, being a recipient of Member of the Order of Australia.

Tennis Australia’s chief tennis officer Tom Larner said Newcombe’s achievements remains an inspiration for the next generation.
